A non-bias intro video of Ultherapy® by Dr Davin Lim, a board certified dermatologist from Australia.
*Note that the 5.5mm transducer that Dr.Lim mentioned in the video is not available for Ultherapy® machines in the US. The 4.5, 3, and 1.5mm transducers are approved by the FDA to use on the face, the deeper ones for other HIFU machines (6.5, 8.0, 11mm) are intended for use on the body only.
Ultherapy®
Lower face laxity, blurred jawline, droopy eyelids
Ultherapy® is a unique non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound technology and real-time imaging to kick-start your body's own collagen production. (Learn more on the official Ultherapy website)
Although Ultherapy® is powerful enough to tighten the skin and lift the face, it can also become a tool that "melts" the face as some patients shared their experiences on RealSelf.com. When the provider isn't careful with patient selection, undesirable results might happen. Take time to talk to the provider, and choose someone who actually understands this tool and is capable of tailoring treatment depths and planning sessions according to your face instead of just following protocols provided by the manufacture.
Ultherapy® is used to solve lower face laxity to eliminate jowls, and when used on the upper neck, it helps to accentuate the jawline which gets buried in the lowered fat pads as we age. Another great use for Ultherapy® is to lift the skin around the eyes, when it's done delicately, it opens the eyes up and improves the look of "hooded" eyes. To minimize the risk of "melting" the face, I take a conservative approach and use a medium setting for the initial treatment and follow up between 4-6 weeks post-procedure to determine whether to increase the energy for the next session. I also use less lines per treatment than the manufacture protocol to ensure safer outcomes.
Although most patients see noticeable changes after 2 weeks of getting the procedure, Ultherapy® is not a one-and-done procedure. To play it safe, you can expect to achieve a desirable result in 3 to 4 treatments, about 8-12 weeks apart. After the 'treatment phase", you should expect to maintenance sessions every 12-24 months. Most patients are NOT good candidates for Ultherapy® in the foreheads.
